I’d tell them you appreciate the offer and would like to work with them but also want to maximize your earning potential so you’ve done some research and believe $160-170k is more consistent with the current market. If they say no because you lack experience in this particular practice area, emphasize your transferable skills. You might get what you ask for or land back at $130k, but either way, asking shouldn’t ruin your offer if done respectfully. This was how I handled it when considering an offer to leave my boutique for a larger firm w/ $50k raise…my firm offered a $60k raise and I stayed for a few more years. I had only been there 1 year at the time so it’s a bit different than your situation but still worth a shot.
