It’s a risky move to give notice before everything is buttoned up. I’d still wait until all background checks and drug screens clear. Background checks can take longer than you anticipate. Some examples I’ve seen - someone at your new job is out on PTO and unable to “clear” it, a reference doesn’t respond right away, your name is close to another that has “hits” and it needs review, etc. Most places will push out a start date if your background check or other pre-employment screening is still pending (my company does that all the time).
If you’re going to a “competitor” there’s a chance your current company wouldn’t even let you work your notice period (rare, but I’ve seen it happen).
I used to think the same thing about my name, till I got detained for an extra hour of scrutiny flying into South Korea due to name similarities.
I would wait til you're cleared. What's the hurry?
Ummm if August first is start date, that’s just pending. Tell new employer of situation and ask for August 15 instead. This gives you plenty of transition time. Also in my opinion it shows the new employer you care and hopefully when you leave the new employer, you will do the same with them.
I wouldn’t give notice until you are cleared, but I would work on transitioning/ramping down your work on the backend. That’s what I did. I knew I was leaving but conflicts took forever to clear, and I ultimately gave my firm 3 business days notice but had already significantly ramped down/transitioned/settled most of my cases by then.
May be scammish....if it sounds too good to be true. It usually is
Very true, however; shady busineses sometimes throw $$$
I am not saying the $35K bump up is a shady firm

Segue but noting I’ve never had to take a drug test for a job and wondering how common that is. I would definitely pass, but might pass on the job on principle.
Counsel, yes and no. It was a division of a F500 public company. The local team (headquarters for the division) had 6 lawyers and 2 paralegals. One paralegal moved out of town due to a spouse's job. One lawyer wanted to unplug and go on sabbatical. I got the call after another lawyer took a job with a competitor. I think that was all within a 2 or 3 week span. The lawyer going to the competitor was the only one of those still around when I started. I had something like a week and a day of overlap with him.
I was there for eight years.
Gave notice right away last Thursday, just got the all clear from the new job today. All worked out.
