Get to know them well and figure out if they are your ally or your enemy. Next steps will depend on how you approach working with then, as much as their attitude and willingness to work with you. They may be relieved you assumed the hard role—just because they interviewed doesn’t mean they really wanted it. Recently went through this and it’s been fine, but it isn’t always.
I would assume that they will want to be your ally, at least for a while. They may eventually move on to another job, but most people will at least try to work with you while they are at the company. Some of my best employees were people who applied for my job. The others left the company fairly quickly, but did good work up until the time they left. Only one unsuccessful applicant was a problem, and he had been a problem long before he applied for the job.
