Was at WK and MAL. Good people at both. You will work hard and party hard. Mostly work hard. And Shanghai never sleeps. If you’re making big expat RMB but spend like a local, you’ll be living like royalty. Lots of 4A agencies that make ok to good stuff, but when you return Western agencies won’t know what to do with the Chinese work. Unless it’s a global brand that translates well (Nike, Apple, Gucci, etc) or unless it’s super cool, avant-garde and transcends language. Bonus points, Subtitled work.

Locals work hard 10:30am-9pm and sleep at their desk during breaks and do long lunches. Expats work longer 8:30am-10:30pm and take shorter lunches and are colonial savages.

VPN is very valuable.

Mandarin, best. Shanghainese, Cantonese, Malay, depends on co-workers. Depending on agency’s use of international talent, English may be the main language.

Rare that people die from overwork. But it does happen.

Is the Fishbowl app even available to download in China?

Based on what I hear from friends in Hong Kong, I would imagine that the agency life in China is more 9am-8pm+ and that it's better if you work for non-Chinese bosses.
