Any thoughts on working at Foster Garvey NY in their corporate team? How is the work life balance in the firm and is the culture very Big Law-esque or does it have a more mid-sized firm culture?

Big law hours with none of the money or prestige

WLB is generally reasonable across the firm, but one of the partners in that group is demanding. It’s a chill culture generally. Very nice people. But can sometimes feel like BigLaw expectations without the pay to match. Maybe worth it if you’re looking for a true 1800 billable.

Alas, my info is a bit outdated. I hear from reliable sources that they are poised to raise associate comp “soon,” but I don’t know how much and it still won’t be anywhere near market, I’m sure. Pay has been a sticking point for senior associates, even though partnership prospects are good.

I’m currently working with a senior level HR candidate. This individual has a doctorate in business with a focus in HR, her SPHR, Federal, and private sector experience at the singer level, and has a fabulous personality. I’m curious is anyone else having difficulties play some candidates like this? At this point I’m starting to think it’s racial or her sex based of the lack of interest in this candidate. Any thoughts?

Hypo: client says they agreed to use a prior agreement another firm drafted as precedent for a new deal prior to engaging you. It’s maybe the most poorly written contact you’ve ever seen. Most material terms are arguably there, but it’s convoluted and you’d be embarrassed to put your name on it. There’s clearly a better way to draft it. To what extent do you re-write certain sections?

Does anyone have experience or thoughts about life after big law (whatever that means)? I applied for a lateral job in a growing group that doesn’t have associates yet. I talked to a sr. associate in a different office/group to get a better sense of the firm’s vibe and we both really enjoyed our call. He kindly offered to recommend an interview to HR. Is there anything else I can do? I would be switching practices altogether so I want to be as proactive as possible to know what I’m getting myself into (and make my app more favorable because I really want to break into the field).

If your goal is to be as high ranking of an in house counsel position as possible, how would you structure your career progression? Is it better to stay in big law as long as possible and then transition as a partner, or is it more valuable to get relevant experience by going in house as a mid level/senior associate? Practice area is IP: working in patent pros, litigation, and tech transactional to varying degrees if that affects the answer.
