This is the laugh I needed today
Do I count if I played Madden for a decade?
Only played D2 football, but did coincidentally have a few Panthers players renting next door to me in Charlotte one year.
One dude was WR4 and the other two were practice squad. Among them was a 4yr/$13M contract, and two minimum wages ($645K/yr). One of the practice guys was a NCAA champ with Saban at Bama, then made $2M in 5 years while barely making the roster. Out of the league by 29.
Another dude I met down here was a long snapper. Won a SB with the Patriots in 2015. Only played 4 years, but made $2.3M. Out of the league by 27.
That big contract would be nice, but I'd be happy with a couple million before 30 too. I'd find a job I love and cruise with minimal stress.
CTE is a lower risk than they make it seem for most players. I played CB in college and every skill position in HS. We simply don't hit each other as much as they used to. I did more tackling drills in middle school than any other level.
Once the season started, I really only hit people in games. There were a few times that coaches would get upset, but a solid wrap up is all I'd do. There's no point banging heads or twisting the legs of a teammate for a meaningless takedown. There's a reason that you don't hear about "contact" injuries from practice at higher levels.
Can't say the same for linemen or LBs though. Only long term damage I have from playing is some knee inflammation, but that's most former athletes in their 30s. Even without playing professionally or at a particularly notable level, I took far more positives from playing than negatives. NFL money would be worth it 100% of the time. The catastrophic outcomes are rare.
As far as stars in this industry go...that's $500k while typically making significant sacrifices. Many aren't great parents or spouses, and life flies by with more memories of business trips than family moments. I'd rather start rich and cruise, than grind to get rich and play eternal catch-up. The FIRE movement exists for a good reason.
Yes I am Michael Jordan
I'm a former linebacker for the oakland raiders
I’ve worked with a former NFL player. All-around fantastic guy
No, although I did just remember, again, that if I were, I’d be the “old guy” on his way to retirement in his early 30s. Sad
