Just signed the outside employment form in KPMG onboarding system. I actually wanted to start dabbling in creative writing as a potentially monetizable hobby, but I'm guessing this may pose issues.
Definitely interested in the "exception from this policy may be requested if provision of non-professional services doesn't interfere with one's duties of causes conflict of interest" clause, though. Has anyone been able to get one of those before?

Depends a lot on things like what state you are in and what level you are. Best thing you could do is have an attorney run through your agreement and advise you. Just keep in mind that even if the agreement is not something they validly uphold, they could run you down and legal fees, trying to fight it. The 50 mile thing though seems very much like it would not be allowed. Pay a few bucks to consult counsel on that.

Every state except Texas banned non-competes below partner level in April of this year. Chances are your firm is unaware, but legally you should be good to disregard.
