Just leave. The people that matter won’t fault you for it as they’d do the same for the correct role/title/price/whatever.
Give 2 weeks notice and leave. No bridges burned.
If losing you causes it to be a sh*tshow then the job was already a sh*tshow and you are just it’s victim. It’s impossible to leave at a perfect time now that there is a year-round busy season. You were only recently assigned to that job. If you leave January - Feb for accelerated filers or Jan - Mar for other public companies or private companies with calendar year end, you may be at risk for burning bridges. Anything outside of those short windows is fair game and within those windows is understandable, but may hurt your future references
No time is ever good, haha. Somebody is gonna feel butthurt in any situation. For yours, especially if you are making a better move, the ones who matter will respect it.
I know a regional firm guy who left in Feb this year to go to E&Y to be an advisory manager. He was going into his 4th year as senior at the regional firm. He got turned down over the summer for promotion. He initially decided to stick around, but this opportunity came and for him it's an offer he cant refuse. The Partner was butthurt, but they weren't going to promote him, so their loss.
The time is when you first caught yourself considering that. It will only intensify with time. Started looking in Aug last year, ended up moving on to private in Dec 2017- never looked back. No regrets whatsoever.
Burning Bridges isn't a thing you should consider. Public companies are a dime a dozen. They'll take anyone with public experience. You'll probably get better pay going to a different one.
No one is going to look out for you other than you. If you find the right opportunity you should take it.
Everyone that says the people that matter will respect it is right. My mentor gave me this advice. The two partners that were butt hurt over my leaving were the ones that tried to keep me back in title and on their engagements.
I'm not even a little sorry to hurt their realization.
Currently, interviewing. Looking for a break...
When is your busy season?
Well, technically it has begun. I got assigned to a 9/30. Honestly, if I leave, it'll be a sh*tshow. Im currently assigned all the way till mid December, off for winter break.
As long as two weeks notice given and you either finish/transition your projects, no bridges should be burnt.
No time is ever gods but some are worse than others...so I disagree with most of you-it matters. And when, as an OMP, I had someone whose last day was mid February reach out a year later to come back to the firm, I didn’t spend two seconds thinking about it. Done. Loyalty is a two way street.
