Left a company that used bonuses as that magic carrot. They justified lower wages because of the “bonus opportunities”. There were a range of other issues and I didn’t see one bonus during my time there. In my opinion, people will catch on pretty quickly to the BS and will look for other opportunities.
Hasn't happened here yet, but I won't be surprised when it does. Companies will do whatever they can to pay us less while making it sound like a favor.

Oh man, yes huge frustration on my end too. Bonuses feel like this shiny carrot companies dangle: “Look at this big check!” But then you do the math and realize a raise would’ve baked that money into your base, compounding on itself forever (or at least until the next raise). A bonus is just a one-time hit that could vanish next year if the company has a bad quarter or decides to “restructure priorities.”
I’ve seen it play out a bunch: people get hyped about a 15% bonus, but it’s effectively worth less than a 5-7% raise over a couple years once you factor in the permanence and how it boosts future percentages. Plus the “not guaranteed” part is brutal which ties your pay to stuff way outside your control (market conditions, exec decisions, whatever)
I don’t get either one. No raises or bonuses here, but I guess that’s just healthcare.

Yes, I totally feel that! Some bonuses are nice, like discounts on shopping, but they just don’t compare to a proper raise. It’s a bit frustrating!
