I did it!
I've done this.
- I was helped a lot by the fact that I left a highly ranked biglaw firm (in a different role) to go into govt; people assumed a lot about my pedigree based on where I had worked before govt.
- I was explicitly told that the amount of time I spent in govt was a sweet spot of having been there long enough to learn things that would be helpful for the firm job but not long enough to pick up bad habits. I think 4+ years of govt experience will be much harder than, like, 2 or less
- A recruiter can be very helpful in giving you a realistic understanding of your chances and how to sell your govt experience in interviews. I also assumed small firms were my only option until speaking to a recruiter who helped me learn I could shoot for higher than that
- This may sound weird but try to stick to roughly the same budget you have now. I was able to save so much money for things like a house, vacations, etc. that I wouldn't have had if I fell for the golden handcuffs. It also gives you the flexibility to go back to govt if you end up feeling like things were better there. I've definitely seen some people do that
Yep. I only stayed in the government role for 7 months.

Yes, I went from a small firm to government and then back to a small firm.
If the government role is related to your field, it’s very helpful because then you have “insider” information (ethically) about how the agency works and who the decision makers are and what helps them make decisions.
