You don’t want to live in LA. You want to live in the surrounding areas lol. Rents are probably similar but a lot depends on where specifically from NY you are coming from and where specifically in the LA area you’re moving. Gas is definitely more expensive. The weather is definitely way better.
I'm from NYC but moved to LA a few years ago and I feel they are super difficult from each other, primarily driven by how dense NYC is.
If you like walking in urban cities and mass transit, you'll find significantly less in LA. There's a lot less foot traffic in LA and the area is a lot more spread out as others have pointed out. Rent/food is also significantly cheaper than comparable areas (e.g. Manhattan/Brooklyn vs similar desirable LA areas). You will likely need a car though, so that will negate some of the savings. Weather is of course better and access to parks/outdoors easier (though also because most have cars).
Overall I think NYC is a much better place for singles while LA is a bit easier for people who are married with children.
Lived in both, but full transparency I grew up in LA and moved to NY as an adult with a young kid. Moved back after a couple years. I have also spent a lot of time in NYC my whole life, had family there and lots of work in the city.
I love both, but I think LA is pretty tough to beat. If weather is bothering you in NY you’ll love LA weather. Depending on where you live it can be more affordable, but depends on where in NY you are living and where in LA you plan to live.
Like NY every neighborhood has its own identity. If you choose wrong you may hate it here, it’s actually tough to generalize “LA” but my take has always been that there is an area for everyone, you just need to find it.
Some things are cheaper like fresh groceries, restaurants overall and you can find less expensive housing (but try and get an apartment in Santa Monica right now…it’s ridiculous after the fires).
Good luck!
Culver City is great! I lived there when things were just starting to get cool there, ie it’s one of the most happening areas of LA. Lots of food options, super convenient to most of LA, even by train. Highly recommend.
I’m thinking of Culver City
Manhattan.
Remote.
