Anyone move to IBM recently, and do you feel like their consulting business is on a positive trajectory?

Yes but to maintain $700k+ comp, one has to hit their numbers every year. Limited hedges available interns of falling back in delivery and people.

Thanks for this. They have been reaching out to me for a Sr Partner role and it’s difficult to determine if it’s worth the jump.

IBM is notorious for use and throw of Sr. P. It’s very much a dog eat dog world in Consulting. The account lead roles are more straight forward. You meet numbers on the account or not. But the horizontal roles (Industry, Practice, Capability, etc) are horrible… everyone will use your brain and brawn but you will land with 0 credits once the deal is won, plus it will be your problem to deliver. So it’s hunt in packs but you will only be feeding the person sitting on the accounts. But, IBM certainly has been one of those brands! They have figured a way to survive… not many 115+ year companies around in the S&P 500. Although IBM Consulting is struggling right now. They exited too many of their bright new hires while retaining the old sycophants in the numerous rounds of lay offs over last couple of years. The consulting business is likely to struggle for a while…

SP1 - sounds a lot like McK these days

Has it been positive since they did layoffs back in like 2005 and lost all
The PwC talent?

Is it a “hunt in packs” kind of place? Or skews more toward solo / eat what you kill?

Just left IBM. Stay away. No collaboration, lifers everywhere you go.

Oof. Thanks for the insight. I’m at Accenture and sounds identical to the flaws we have, but I figured IBM might be better because the consulting side is smaller than us. Seems maybe not.

Appreciate the responses.

You will be sucked dry of your contacts, network and any consulting secrets, and discarded in 2 years. You won’t get $1 more than the base for those 2 years. You won’t be able to go back and sell to those clients again, you’ll be forever tarnished as the used car salesperson. So yes, if you are jobless, all you need is 2 years worth of base salary. Why not?
