I’m a very bad driver (totaled 2 cars in accidents not involving other cars and had my license suspended for traffic tickets and rear ending someone), and actually think the drivers in LA are some of the best drivers. They are for sure more aggressive about cutting you off and getting where they’re going, but they are also better at defensive driving and preventing accidents when someone else (like me) messes up. They’re also better at merging and some other basic mechanics. They are bad about driving in the rain though.
Agree with this. Overall pretty impressive defensive drivers
Much better than Miami
Drivers here are much better than most places I’ve been. Boston, NYC drivers are insane. I feel like most drivers just go with the flow. You get a lot of people who think they are in the fast and the furious but if you ignore them you’re fine. Much less honking and rage than I’ve experienced in other places, much less tail riding.
Every time I go back east I am shocked by how much honking there is. I appreciate how we just sit in traffic in silence here.
Yes it's bad here. But I think it stems from the fact that if you don't take some risks, you'll literally never get anywhere. You have to be the 3rd car to turn left on red, sometimes you have to cut people off in order to make it across 5 lane of traffic, otherwise you'll never make it to your destination.
We also have insane intersections like the Beverly Hills asterisk that are so poorly designed, you just drive in and pray you make it through.
I drive completely differently here than other places I've lived or am visiting.
OMG, that BH “intersection” is the worst. It’s like a game of chicken.
I think LA drivers aren't too bad in terms of driving safely, but they can be rude. Too many people would speed up if they see a car signaling before getting into their lane so many opt to signal WHILE they change into the lane. And then there are whose who drive 65 mph in the fastest lane and make others switch lanes to go pass them.
I have lived in many cities. Every precious angel from another place thinks they are unique and geography contributes to driver incompetence.
Another person said it, we have so many drivers from all over and people think they’re the most important thing and no one else matters. I thought New Jersey drivers were worse and would never drive myself in India. Here people think as soon as they get in the freeway they need to get all the way over in the fast lane even though they should be in the slow lane. That usually doesn’t happen back on the east coast, drivers will get over if they see people flying up on them, here people don’t do that they just sit in the lane and cause traffic to back up. And people have such road rage here. My list goes on lol
I think it’s because we get a lot of people from other parts of the world and so it becomes a mess here. I was driving in the hills and the SUC next to me thought red lights were optional. Crazy
It's the red light behaviour that gets me. Seeing two people turn left after the light turns red (and being honked at if I don’t turn after it changes) is still a little weird for me. In the Canadian city where I'm from, there are red light cameras that send you fairly expensive tickets, so people generally wait.
“‘The Vehicle Code actually addresses this situation,‘ said Sgt. Brian Pennings with the California Highway Patrol. ‘It says that you shall pull forward into the intersection when the light turns green, at which time you need to yield to oncoming traffic that's close enough to constitute an immediate hazard.’”

I think LA is a hard city to drive in. There’s heavy traffic. Freeway traffic can go from 70mph to 0 quickly. There’s often debris on the road. And we have a lot of tourists that don’t know the area. You definitely need to pay attention while driving here.
