Patience and empathy. I'm a copy CD and it can be really nerve-racking to give direction to ADs, especially ones who focus more on how you're saying something versus what you're actually saying. You’re over here trying to communicate in a different language and they’re making fun of your accent. In an ideal world all teams would have two seniors of each discipline but that rarely happens. I'm a CD at an agency where very few CDs are women so that adds another layer. Sometimes I want to ask another CD with a design background on a different account for advice when there's creative conflicts with a junior, but I'm also under a lot of pressure just to prove my talent and right to exist. The ADs that I make the best work with don't gatekeep or snark. They also don't coddle me and will tell me when something goes against good design principles and let me make the call whether I want to proceed. They open up a discussion when they disagree instead of getting sullen and resentful or changing the work so minimally that it's barely noticeable in the next round. They pick their battles and don't fight me over every single pixel because that shit is exhausting. They know that a lot of this stuff is subjective and we aren't always going to agree, the exact same way it would be if they had a design person leading them.
