Asking for help feels like admitting failure. How do you overcome that fear and admit when you need guidance?

My experience is that if you have a good boss, they will appreciate the fact that you asked for help, as opposed to waiting until things progressed to a bad point.

Understand that no one expects you to know everything. I know plenty of lawyers with decades of experience that will admit that they don’t know everything there is to know. That’s why it’s called the “practice” of law. Failing would be just giving up. Approach asking for help as an opportunity to learn and grow in your career.

Easy! Asking for help makes you be able to learn and go faster. Embrace it! Ask for help and be committed to learning so your skill set grows to the point that others soon start asking YOU for help! Commitment to learning is advancing self so you can help others on their journey. Be proud that you care enough to grow!

What are you considering when assigning cases to firms in the defense panel. I’m a 2nd year associate at a national ID firm (~300 attorneys) and want to create rapport with claim managers I’m currently working with. Any advice?

Alternatively, is there something that will cause you not to assign cases to particular firm?

My firm typically does insurance defense, but we take plaintiffs cases here and there. Is it typical that work done by associates on contingency cases isn’t counted toward their billable hour requirements unless and until we receive our fee on the case? This is my first experience with this, but it’s hard for me to reach my hours as is, without spending time on non billable cases like this with no assurance that I’ll see billable credit at the end.
