Just sort of happened organically. Jumped agencies one role up, billing rate went up, and being involved with the tactical stuff would've blown the budget - which I was responsible for. So I started delegating and supervising. Was fortunate enough that my basics were strong and was already functioning at a strategic level, so the biggest challenge was understand when to pull back and when to step in.
Seems to be going well since the teams I work with say they feel supported yet independent.

I do feel like its a different muscle to master knowing when to get out of the weeds. The budget piece definitely forces you to make that change sometimes.
Echoing the above, it happened pretty organically. I started by leading work streams on accounts before shifting to fully lead accounts. I personally struggled the most with delegating at the beginning, especially with more junior staff where it would take longer to explain and review than it would if I did it myself. But knowing that beyond client work, we’re also here to help up level our teams has helped

The relying on junior staff to do stuff and make sure I actually have a client ready product is the part I think I'm really struggling with.
I’d say there wasn’t a “point” where I felt like I switched from individual contributor to leading teams.
I think the best, most effective leaders lead regardless of their role—it isn’t about telling people to do and being put into a position of authority. It’s about showing you have a pov and knowledge to share and getting people to trust you/naturally turn to you.
I think this helps with the transition, because you do the hardest part of stepping into leadership which is answering the question “why does this person deserve to be in charge of me.”
It doesn’t become easy once you step into the role either; you will be confronted with new challenges and learnings. Lessons will still need to be learned about how to be a better leader that make you rethink your own assumptions of what it means to be a good leader. But leading an effective AND happy team is a great reward.

Appreciate your perspective on this and love the idea that you need to lead with a POV to make people naturally rally around you.
