Been unemployed for a year, never had trouble getting a job in my life. Just turned 60yrs,old. Tell me that I'm not being stereotyped. Guess that I'm going to network more.

There's a lot of age discrimination in business, but no one will ever admit to it. Companies can always find a reason to pass on someone and they're smart enough never to mention age, for legal reasons. Networking is the best strategy, by the way. The people you've worked with and interacted with may know someone who knows of a job. Putting out feelers in your network can be pretty powerful.

I used to think networking was kind of a waste of time, until I got into my 50s and now I realize it's pretty much the only way to find work when you're an older working professional. Thankfully I have a network that has been really valuable, but I feel bad for the people who didn't make any industry connection connections and are now having to find work later in life. Young folks, make those connections!

that doesn't help, but its not just you. do more than a few minutes of googling and you will see people less than half your age (but still with 5+ yoe) getting zero traction. the current job market is terrible given a lot of uncertainty for companies, plus the sad fact that it's become a hallpass to abuse the situation even where the company in question is not in a sector/subsector facing serious uncertainty. keep at it.

I am in the same boat. The only offers I get, are from small time operations that nobody wants to apply to. But I can't give you some pointers. The same way that the search engines work for finding a website, i.e. finding tires in your town or somebody who sells them, are the same Types of things recruiters look for on resumes. For whatever your field is or whatever your type of job you're looking for, do a search for that job title and keywords to include on your resume. Add those in there as much as you can. Secondly, when you're posting or looking for jobs on the Internet, always sort by the date. That way you get the most recent published jobs, instead of seeing ones that were put out there two and three and four weeks ago. They be more attractive, but they're not recent. Chances are they've already hired who they're going to hire. The early bird gets the worm as it were. Also double your efforts if you're sending out 10 resumes per day, send out 20. In a week that's 100. Or treat your job search as a 40 hour work week, and put it an eight hour day. Including talking to recruiters, networking on the phone with your contacts.Hopefully this helps and best of luck!

You should constantly Network and not wait until your back is against the wall. Most companies have someone in mind before a job is even posted. Target companies that fit your particular demographic. Get in where you fit in. It will save you a lot of time and frustration in your job search.

I won't lie to you, ageism is a thing. I have several friends who are having the issue and I can see how ageism is affecting them. I am sorry this is happening to you.

I get it, I'm 59 and having the same challenge. I have over 25 years experience in the areas of Sales & Business Development within the relocations industry. I'm now seeking opportunities out of state.

Can we be friends please?

For questions as to why you are looking to leave your current firm.. I am looking to move because for some reason I am hand-held a lot and given simpler tasks, so I am getting bored and want more challenging / much more fast paced environment. Also kind of bored because I am on one project for a long time and I want exposure to variety of projects. Is this a fair answer or would I be seen as arrogant? Is there a better way to frame my answer?
