Been working FT for 3 years now but my references are still from college part-time gigs and professors. I know I need to update my list with current supervisors and all, but don't want them thinking I'm job hunting, especially since I'm not. Any tips on how to approach this without getting the "wait, are you leaving?" conversation?

There's no need to update your references unless you're already interviewing for a job. On your resume you can just say references are available upon request. Generally speaking, there's no need to provide them until you're well along in the interviewing and hiring process.

I personally don't think it's a big deal to ask. I have employees ask to be a reference eventually all the time, and as long as they assure me they aren't leaving, I won't assume they're leaving until they tell me they are. But there's also no harm in waiting until you actually need the references to ask for them.

I really wouldn't take the risk until you absolutely need to update your references. Whether you need your references right now or not, they will assume that you are job hunting.

I couldn’t get an internship while in school. I have a BS in ME and projects from school under my belt. I’ve also passed the FE exam.
