Nothing is impossible if you really want it. There are success stories too. But it is difficult.
If you’re a new M and coming back from mat leave, it’s the same as starting as a new M
If you’re a 1-2yr M and coming back, you are likely to lose the work you were doing (6month break) and have to start afresh, build a runway for yourself (difficult) and then take off (also difficult).
If you’re >2yr M or above, unless you were set on your path before leaving (which in itself is very difficult), there is a setback, If you are clear what to do, then the entire universe has to conspire in mysterious ways that all forces at work and home and baby (3 different entities) come together to support you. Add to that PIP pressure, hearing max dossier rules, tracking sold/managed credits, fighting for staffing, re-networking, re-appearing in conversations, being considered ‘fit for future’, fit for important projects, peer pressure, senior C/Ms now your peers, ‘not selling enough’, ‘not delivering enough’.
In all of this kudos if you have strong willpower and pray you have good leadership because without either it’s hard to make it work. IMO You have to break a glass ceiling to be considered fit for future.
There are hardly any success stories! And also remember you only see the people who could fight back and managed to stay, a very big number just left which is out of our sight! Trust me it’s a huge proportion!! Ask for data on how many women took maternity leave in last 2 years and how many are still in ZS, I can assure you answer is probably <10%
What are the drawbacks? I will be on mat leave next week and expecting an AP promo, is it even possible ?
Thanks for sharing the insights zs1, it is not fair that I spend 1-2 years again to build my footing and my colleagues move to leadership positions. I can imagine how demotivating it would be especially when you are already busy taking care of a new life. I agree that we talk so much about women@zs but they don’t care apart from getting brownie points for themselves or just promoting themselves. Sad reality
It is really bad, but an A from my team got promoted just after returning to AC.
I have heard a lot of stories of CO after maternity and it happened with one of my colleagues as well, so yeah definetely the worst
