I work in energy in New Mexico and am just wondering if it's smarter to move to Dallas or Austin to practice. Family is tired of New Mexico and the wife wants a better community to live in so that's a factor too. Open to all opinions.

Houston is the energy capital of the world. This is a no brainer.

like

I’ve lived in all three and Dallas and Houston are both great places to live and are more alike than they are different. Houston has maybe the most robust energy market in the world but Dallas is definitely still has opportunity. Biggest difference is Houston has cross-border energy work and domestic work and Dallas is mostly domestic (Permian, North Dakota, Oklahoma) in my experience.

Austin is a harder market to break into and more expensive as a city.

I’m in Houston FWIW

For energy move to Houston. Not Austin

like

AUSTIN can be a hard market. Houston first for energy, Dallas 2nd. Happy to talk anytime.

Austin energy is going to be focused more on state regulatory (i.e. railroad commission) stuff. Dallas will be more diverse and have more energy finance work. Austin is a smaller city that is feeding into its influx of tech Bros. Dallas has a much larger cosmopolitan feel

Easily Dallas.

Definitely Dallas for energy

Between Dallas and Austin, pick Austin. Between Dallas and Houston, Houston.

If you're coming from New Mexico, I assume that you're coming from either a litigation or title practice. I find it curious that Houston isn't listed? Obviously that should be your first choice as it boasts considerably more energy positions than either Dallas or Austin. I've been in energy about 13 years, 5 of which have been in big law. In my experience Dallas and Austin energy positions are mostly either at 2nd tier firms or 1st tier firms with offices in those cities, but are very competitive. If you're looking to just find a job, then I'm sure you can find something in one of those cities, but if you're looking to make the best move for your career I think it would be a disservice to yourself not looking at Houston.

Additional Posts in Texas Big Law & Elite Boutiques

So the question has been asked a few times in the main Big Law bowl but keeps getting derailed into a political issue. As someone with a more conservative disposition anyway I'm interested in the day to day of life and work in Texas as opposed to NYC (or similar).

So, what are the pros and cons of living in Texas and working in Texas Biglaw?

I figured this bowl being specific to Texas would understand importance of oil and gas industry.
