Speaking from personal experience, working for a small company only makes sense if you are making significantly more than your peers. 35k is a lot of money but what’s the upside? You are unlikely to move up in a 50-person company.
If you’re on a rocket ship of a startup then you could bank way more with the new company
Forgot to clarify- the smaller company is actually in industry, not consulting.
PWC1 - great point, but I’m wondering if this opportunity can be used to gain data science experience to move to another company later, esp with a higher starting salary compared to my current 90k. I would like to move out of consulting and into data scientist roles in the future, but don’t have the in depth experience yet
PwC is influenced by benchmarking vs. peers. Why care if you're making more money than others when you're trying to break into a new field? How difficult would it be to get another DS offer in a yr or 2 after accepting the consulting offer? The DS offer affords you the opportunity to increase your salary, work in a desired field, and challenge yourself to perform (lots of responsibility in 50 person firm). If you don't like your growth potential after 2 years, leave.
Take the money. Use that as spring board for more money in 2-3 years.
Also, small company could mean bigger risk if it’s basically a services company aka consulting. Smaller firms will live and die by the next deal they can sell. Bigger firms have more of a cushion
Go with the latter
Take the offer at the smaller firm because $ difference is significant enough. That said, moving to FANG in a data science role for example from Lighthouse (KPMG) is easier than from a smaller firm. I will get interviewed for most roles I might apply at FANG for data science because people rate the consulting exp and Lighthouse has pedigree.
Great insight, thanks! What’s the best way to connected with lighthouse? Exp required? Currently focused in analytics (reporting, modeling, integration, governance), but not heavy data science.
Basically sounds like a start up. Op figure out what round of funding it is and think like a venture capitalist
