I've heard too many copywriters say, "I just told ChatGPT to punch it up." There are legitimate uses for LLMs, but I know I can punch up copy better than one.
But these same lazy writers go on to be creative directors…
I’ll be honest - what we do is so mind-numbingly useless that if I can get through any of the countless inane asks that come my way per week even 10% faster by offloading the initial “bad idea” phase to a machine, I’m all for it. Currently it is as good at if not better than my juniors.
Calm down everyone

It’s a tool. Learn how to use it to make your work better. Or someone else will.

that’s part of it for sure . If it can handle the mindless stuff, we get more space for the creative work that actually needs us. So you can focus on the craft vs the churn.
The number of times I’ve had to punch up whatever AI trash the client insists on wanting…
Well that means you are still adding better value
“I asked ChatGPT…” typically goes one of two ways. If it’s something that could have been googled, I find myself wincing. But more often than not, if I suspend the urge to roll my eyes for just a little longer, I discover someone using it to examine or challenge their own assumptions as much as shortcut an answer. Google rarely does that, and I usually spend more time asking the person about their motivations an expectations of AI than the answer. That’s the really interesting stuff.
Where do you work? I need bosses like you.
We use it constantly. As was mentioned, the trick is to use it for what it’s good at so we have more time to do what we’re good at. Whether you like it or not feels like a separate issue. But that’s the pace at which things move now. And the staffing levels…
Thanks for this super thoughtful and specific reply. I find it so useful to know what others are doing with AI. I am with you that it's the work that is not super important but just needs to get done where it shines. Just one example, I recently found myself having to pump out meta ads with very tight character counts and it was good at getting my lines down to the right length. Things like that I find really useful.
I mean that’s your choice or view point to have that opinion. I use AI almost every day to help me move along on projects or comms, get started with outlines so I can actually deliver on all the priorities. I always read it over and edit but it helps me greatly. I’m also not in a creative role and using it for client work so it’s also different situations.
