Confession time: have you ever contributed to a toxic workplace? What did you learn from it?

How to have migraines

Contribute, I wouldn't say so however what I have learned is that those types of environment will not change unless the change is supported from the top down. Everyone has to be on the same page which in healthcare is difficult. If it's toxic, it's a sign to leave.

I think that I have but not on purpose. I am one of those people that tends to be friends with everyone and in trying to keep everyone happy I sort of ended up in the middle of office drama. I learned how to stay out of it and just keep to myself. I don't want to know about the drama or be in the middle of it.

When I started out as a brand new solo practice orthopaedic surgeon, I inadvertently pitted my first two employees against each other in a competition to later be considered for advancement to a role of office manager. One quit a couple of months after I opened my practice, the other quit after about a year, when I decided to hire someone else to be office manager.

I learned I really don't like managing people. Through three jobs and two career changes since leaving medicine, I've avoided any job that includes managing other people or taking responsiblity for their work.

So I had been working as medical interpreter up to the early part of this year. Today, during an interview, the Director with whom I was interviewing genuinely urged me to consider pursuing a career as a PA or even attempt to go to medical school. I had considered it in passing before but today was about the third or fourth time that someone had earnestly nudged me in that direction. Has anyone here made such a career pivot before? I love working in healthcare, there’s nothing like it.
