They’re a formidable competitor and have gotten some great talent from us. Also some questionable hires but on the net they’ve done well with the poaching.
I’m a 10 year plus A&M partner. All of my projects have 3+ partners to help deliver the best service. No doubt there can be sharp elbows but it really depends on whether you have real relationships and expertise. People will not be handing you business.
Known for sweat shop culture, claiming they compensate for performance due to their bonus structure. I don’t dislike where they are heading - as they poached some Deal Advisory Strategy big guns from KPMG.
You’ll make 3x more than a shitty big 4 partner
I took a close look about a year ago. Upside potential was higher for sure. Numbers can get very big very fast. Your first 18 months are guaranteed and then they hold you to the fire. All fine except culture is rough. I reached out to at least a dozen former MDs on LinkedIn. The stories were brutal. Sure you discount complaints from EX employees but when 8 or 10 strangers tell me virtually identical stories and describe some MDs I would work with using nearly identical words, I start to think these are not a few isolated complaints.
Eat what you kill but you can eat well if you make it rain
The consensus, both from headhunters and those who have been there and left, is that there are a lot of sharp elbows and the culture isn’t right for everyone. That being said, they have hired a lot of good talent and clearly many people think the value prop is worth it.
They seemed to be recruiting for A&M, so I presume they had a clue about the culture
Highly dependent on area, like anywhere else. They also have old timers who isolate new folks, like anywhere else. They seem to churn through many more direct admits once the guarantees are up than most places. Everyone I know who has gone has been pushed out in 18 months.
Pushed out of couldn't cut it? No one is pushed out. That wouldn't make any sense to eat the unproductive time when they're on their guarantee and let them go when the sunk cost becomes very minimal.
Is it really a sweat ship when you get paid for what you bill/sell?

I was also warned of sharp elbows at A&M.
Might consider FTI as well. Incredibly collaborative culture, attracting great talent and growing like crazy
It’s a brutally competitive environment and if you can understand the comp model you are smarter than I am, looked like about 800K first 2 years but couldn’t figure how they got to that or why it would be worth the pay cut
Then it’s Darwinian
