Copywriters who’ve been in the industry for quite some time and managed to get out - how?

I’m a Group Copy Sup. All jobs I’ve applied to that have to do with comms, content creation, publishing, editing, marketing, strategy, etc. I get rejected from because I feel like I am so niched into pharma, but I know I can perform in those roles based on ALL of the hats us CWs wear. Any advice? Any roles or *specific titles* you’ve had success/know others have had success transitioning to? Thank you.

All those other jobs are melting away. The only thing we have going for us is the regulatory environment which makes it so tricky to create tactics that are approvable. Stay here, it's no better anywhere else.

Try to start landing freelance in those areas on the DL. It’ll help add those areas to your portfolio. Work those jobs nights and weekends if you have to.

You could talk to recruiters about moving to consumer at a lower title. In general I agree with CS1. Maybe changing agencies or teams could help too.

I sympathize with you wanting to get out, but if it's that bad, you should be looking for an out from the industry, not just pharma. The fact is that it's going to be even harder to find nonpharma work the more and more consumer campaigns are shrinking and AI is growing. If you want to be in advertising, this very unsafe space is the safest one you have.

this is really annoying but you could create a passion project or study where you develop brand from top to bottom voice, tone etc and or even better help a friend launch a biz and make it great to show your capabilities to own and drive copy from conceptual to execution

or perhaps writing for org you believe in pro bono

I’d make spec projects. But realistic ones that answer real briefs. Show that you’re both conceptual and can solve real problems; don’t just show the pie in the sky ad they would never be able to do. Show the smart thing that answers their brief and is great.

When you want someone to hire you, you’re saying I know you can only afford one person and if they don’t work out, you’ll be doing this work. So demonstrate you’ll make their lives easier. And if you don’t have work from your job that does that, create it.

One of the benefits of the ai that’s taking people’s jobs is that you can actually make the images, videos or apps that you think of without going to a production company.

If I was a junior on a team during a campaign launch, is that something I can put in my book? I helped during the concepting phase, was responsible for keeping the boards up to date, and wrote a lot of the supporting materials (print, social etc) but obviously I was not on the shoot or the lead on writing the script. As long as I’m clear about my role is that acceptable?

I’ve been interviewing at an agency with the intention of filling a Director role. Recruitment reached out soon after my last meet-and-greet interview (about 6 to 7 people total) to tell me the team thinks I would be best suited for an Associate Director role with a fast follow of a Director promotion.

Recruitment can’t tell me what feedback is creating this gap but also won’t stop mentioning the positive praise and feedback the team had for me.
