Could someone who gets an LLM in tax go into financial areas of law like working for the SEC or prosecuting white collar crime at the Attorney General’s office? If no, why not? What other jobs outside of big law, big 4 and the IRS would someone with an LLM in tax law qualify for?

Sure. Probably not as many opportunities at the SEC, and who knows what's going on at the DOJ, but yes, on AGs offices.

Yes. Tax can be a good pipeline to the financial and white collar world

I have a friend who went to DOJ Tax and then a US Attorneys office. There’s a path, but you have to be specific in your steps.

Thank you!

This one is going to make some of y’all mad, but it’s so annoyingly unnecessary. The most irritating part is “is it a shirt day or a skirt day”…. Like women don’t wear shirts with skirts and men don’t wear shirts with pants. Shirts and skirts are not mutually exclusive. I’ll just leave this here.

Has anyone dealt with stuffing allocation in a non-hedge fund context? It seems even in the HF world the law is fuzzy in using aggregate reverse 704c principles in stuffing allocations. Like, sure, the market is there but no authority really blessed it (other than some Cravath partner’s article in Tax Notes in 2013). If we are talking asset class that isn’t really like marketable securities but might be able to treat it similarly solely by virtue of, say, valuation on a quarterly basis (contd)

Transitioning from com. lit into tax controversy?

I have a tax LLM and started my career out of law school doing M&A tax at a big4. After 9 months, I got out of big4 transactional hell and into whatever litigation I could find. I now practice commercial lit but would welcome the opportunity to eventually transition into tax controversy (which I wasn’t able to do before). Does my commercial litigation “break” hurt my prospect? How long can I stay in com lit without hurting my chances even more?
