Transitioning from com. lit into tax controversy?

I have a tax LLM and started my career out of law school doing M&A tax at a big4. After 9 months, I got out of big4 transactional hell and into whatever litigation I could find. I now practice commercial lit but would welcome the opportunity to eventually transition into tax controversy (which I wasn’t able to do before). Does my commercial litigation “break” hurt my prospect? How long can I stay in com lit without hurting my chances even more?

I've got into tech about 5 years ago since then I've worked in SQL, excel, database administration, PowerShell, html, some python, shell, SharePoint, power automate, power apps, various apis and other software.

I feel like I just keep taking on small bits of information/skills but never get specialized. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go from here or been in a similar situation?

Offered exit from a large UK company with a 25% base bump (almost matching the total comp based on expected bonus at the dog year - in 7 months). At the same time, advancing discussions with FAANG with strong buy signals (verbal comp at similar levels). Team at the non-FAANG really want me to join them and I see great development opportunities and interesting projects.

Has anyone made the jump from the tax group of an AmLaw 100 firm to a Big 4 tax group? I have questions.

Has anyone dealt with stuffing allocation in a non-hedge fund context? It seems even in the HF world the law is fuzzy in using aggregate reverse 704c principles in stuffing allocations. Like, sure, the market is there but no authority really blessed it (other than some Cravath partner’s article in Tax Notes in 2013). If we are talking asset class that isn’t really like marketable securities but might be able to treat it similarly solely by virtue of, say, valuation on a quarterly basis (contd)

I am going to claim that the income should be sourced from Texas—I worked out of the Houston office from time to time while there. I was in Texas for more than half the year.

For anyone who practices tax lit in the US Tax Court, what’s your experience with the independent office of appeals? They don’t seem quite that “independent” to me and so far, I’ve only had one appeals officer who seemed knowledgeable and nice. It’s been a real headache. Anyone have any thoughts on a fair salary for a part time virtual tax prep-focused position? I’ve been made an offer for south of 800 hours/year (fluctuating for seasonal ebb and flow, of course), and I’m curious whether it’s a decent offer or not.
