If you own a business, you expense everything you can for tax reasons

Correct. But you can’t expense club memberships like the one referenced.

I golf with lots of lawyers at my firm and elsewhere, and I came from the golf industry. I’ve never heard of a law firm paying for a golf membership. It happens at other businesses occasionally, but has been more or less phased out of the American workplace.

I don't think so, in fact partners are expected to pay for a lot of BD stuff from their own pocket bc ostensibly they personally benefit from the success.

At my firm share partners can't even expense lunch with summer associates (so they try to bring an income partner or associate and have them pay/expense).

I have never heard of this. And I thought my firm was cheap.

They don’t. Most lawyers that are big/good golfers just want one for their own sake and pay for it themselves and submit expenses when they bring clients or do other work-related things.

Joining a big firm next week as fully remote lateral and flying out to home office for orientation. The schedule has me in office until 4:15. I’ve already been told I won’t have any actual work. First time visiting this city so it’d be great to take in some sights too (although that’s not a priority of course).

Was interviewing with a firm and soon after receiving an offer, learned of bad culture/toxic partners in the practice group from a couple of associates who recently lateraled from the firm. I turned the offer down. A partner that I clicked with while interviewing reached out asking me why I turned down the offer. Should I be honest and relay what I heard?

Joined a big firm (Big4) not long a go and starting to feel like I got a good grip on my current work.

Can any seasoned lawyer share tips and materials (i.e. books) which can help?

What is comp like in Minneapolis firms? Do some pay significantly better than others, or are they all the same? Spouse’s family in MN so considering a move, but I make DPW scale currently (am a litigation associate) and the salary estimate I got from a firm in MN would be 40% less than what I currently make! Cost of living and hours requirement slightly lower in MN, but nowhere near 40%! Are there any options that would not result in a drastic pay cut?

What questions should senior associates be asking to get a better assessment of partnership prospects? For context, I’m eligible this year as an 8th year, but it’s more common to make it around years 10-11 at my firm (only equity partners), and I’m trying to determine whether to stick around or lateral before I’m too senior. I’m in a smaller group that historically promotes only one new partner every few years, and there are several others also eligible. Any questions I should avoid asking?
