Anyone interested in Theo v2?

Toronto ad fish 🤠 I’ve spent most of my career working as a copywriter in London (6 years here, 2 years Toronto) and the market is pretty different here. I’m planning on moving back home but wondered….how do you find work in Toronto? Agencies barely post openings, is the recruiter scene strong? Is it mostly who you know?

It’s soooo toxic. First of all, a company that you don’t give permission to ranks you and publishes your name without consent as if they’re the arbiter of human value. Secondly they do a TERRIBLE job of it, last year they left out at least 3 international awards on my ranking for important shows. Thirdly they factor their own garbage shows into the mix so that people pay to enter them despite being entirely valueless to the creative community. It’s essentially extortion, if you want to rank on this list you have to enter our shows.
And the vanity posts from people who are humbled and proud. I find it all to be so so cringe and epically toxic. I’m all for winning key awards at big shows, but strategy magazine is a parasite and this list does more harm than good. That my take.
I corrected them last year because they left off ALL of my awards lol, and they did fix it in the end (I was top 20 so annoying but good that they fixed it)

It’s a reflection of an agency’s award budget more than individual talent.
and which categories we can game. Places like rethink know which categories at specific award shows they can inundate with entries because they know competition will be barren/weak in them.
I know because i was told to focus on specific types of ideas to help in that regard lol.

I look at the bottom of that list and see some creatives who are incredible and then think of others who are great that aren’t even on it.
And then I look at others near the top and have worked with them before and they’ve been a pain to work with / not as good as others much lower.
Personally I think it’s kind of meaningless and a lot of it is weighted towards strategy’s own award shows.
I don’t want to care but I do. The one thing I know is I have never looked at it without being disappointed somehow. Lol.
I feel this in my bones. I look every year with a "who cares?" attitude and... I truly care and I hate it. I'm always on the list but never top 10.

They’ve made it hard not to care (even if it’s caring about what utter BS they are) because as an industry we’ve allowed them to attach our value to it.
I feel like I’ve had a very successful career, have won every award, done big famous stuff, and have never even cracked the top 100. I wish I didn’t care but, sadly I do
Yeah sorry I meant over my career. And yeah have won some lions. I think maybe one year I was like in the 40s or something.
I used to care. When I was higher on the list, I was mostly miserable, low-key hated my job and had no life outside of work. I’m not sure if I’m on the list at all this year and I’ve never been happier in a job position.

These “rankings” have been nothing but destructive to the industry in Canada.
Awards still mattered but were a very different thing for less transient work before this existed.
One of the best things about working in other markets is that such a thing doesn’t exist.
I've ranked in the top five and I've ranked outside the top 100. The latter was much, much better for my mental health.
Totally agree, it's not good for our industry. Not because there aren't people / places doing more awarded work.
But we're facing an existential threat to the agency model and this focuses our attention in the wrong place.

Award shows celebrate mostly scammy case studies that didn’t sell anything and real people have never seen, which is dumb. So of course a ranking system that adds up all the dumb scammy awards is even dumber.
I see a lot of lovely, deserving people I’ve worked with over the years high up on the lists this year and that makes me very happy for them!
It’s based on the number of times a name appears in pay to play awards submissions and paid for PR fluff articles. The only thing more useless than this list is an opinion that it matters. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s actually put together by an intern. Forget it.

CSO 1 is right. Strategy tells you on their website which awards contribute to the score. There’s no need to guess.

It’s definitely not perfect and they do make a lot of errors but people who say it’s complete bullshit are wrong. It’s still a good indicator of who’s currently doing well at award shows. Also I wish they gave less importance to their own shows and more to those who do matter.

What it is useful for is as a list of 500 creatives, categorized by function, for me to look at when hiring. And it doesn’t really matter where they are on the list because sometimes the best are at the bottom that year. Making the 500 matters. Beyond that it doesn’t matter.
I care, but I don’t worry about it. I know it doesn’t reflect the value I provide my client or agency.
And I’m sure we would win more awards if we spent more money putting cases together and entering them, but I don’t really care about that either. I’d rather work on the next project and work on winning an award for something I did a year ago.

No. I work on campaigns that get results but don’t get awards. I generally know that before taking the job.
The ICA list is more legit, as it only counts awards people actually want to win.

Earnest question: how much does it matter when it comes to hiring?

Hiring managers take the rankings with a grain of salt. Sometimes creatives are ranked quite high but it’s for the only good thing they’ve ever done—or they’re just slashed on a big campaign and weren’t really a big contributor. People looking to hire go down the list and then check out creatives’ portfolio and make an educated guess about how good they really are. So the CRC helps you get on people’s radar, but a high ranking alone won’t get you a big job or big raise.
