Toronto ad fish 🤠 I’ve spent most of my career working as a copywriter in London (6 years here, 2 years Toronto) and the market is pretty different here. I’m planning on moving back home but wondered….how do you find work in Toronto? Agencies barely post openings, is the recruiter scene strong? Is it mostly who you know?

I do feel like the culture of celebrating overworking in Toronto adland is diminishing and this legislation is another positive step in the right direction.
The final hurdle will likely be that as long as senior management (especially at network agencies) is bonused primarily for profit margin while keeping salaries low, they will continue to make employees bill as many hours as they can, burn their employees out, and then replace them with fresh meat.
@C1- my first observations were lots of layers and meeting. Too many cooks in the kitchen and none to lead and make a call. Things tend to drag in never ending self questioning if it's the best way to do things. I guess we were more maverick in a Aus. Get it done with gut instinct and if it's not working pivot quickly and come up with something else. Mind you, my expertise lies more in the digital space.
*edit* Non Compete not NDA
The Non compete was never really an enforceable thing. Never held up on court. Take a read. https://globalnews.ca/content/8363992/can-non-compete-clause-be-enforced/
In regards to not being contacted after close, I don’t think it changes a thing.
The non-compete ban and recognition of foreign credentials are the big news here.
Might be slightly less applicable to Adland but will have the largest ramifications across more industries, especially small, technical fields.
I feel pretty good about it, although I’ve always been good with boundaries.
As far as I understand it’s not legal to have workers, below managerial level, work more than 48 hours a week with out some sort of extra compensation and we all know how that’s going. Sooooo… 🤷 . It seems the onus is on the employees to police this as most agencies won’t. I see the industry completely ignoring the right not to be contacted after close of business.
I fear you are right.
