Fantasize about quitting mid year?!?!….what a very rude question, considering I fantasize about quitting before the school year begins!!! 🤭
I’m retiring on April 1st . I can’t wait. I love my kiddos too; but you reach a point where you know you are done.
Yes. I try to let the fantasy be a pressure release, then reconnect with the parts of the job that still spark something real.
Every. Single. Day. :)
I guess you could say I've fantasized about it, but no, it's been more like threaten it or consider it. I am at retirement age, and my husband and two younger siblings have retired, so it becomes tempting. I actually called the union up to ask them about what I needed to do to leave mid-year when I complained about a safety issue and the principal was going to move me to the back corner of the building in a room by myself. I actually even told him that I was considering putting in a 60-day notice to see if it would change his mind, but he didn't seem to care, He only changed his mind when I contacted the union rep who contacted HR and the district safety office. I still have the option of turning in notice any time I want, but I really enjoy teaching.
I had a fantasy about walking out midday. Hasn't happened in years, just thought about it today.
I have those relatively regularly, lol!
No. First, I will fulfill my contract.
Second, I refuse to consider things that I know that I shouldn’t do. If I start to fantasize about it, then I am that much further down the path to actually doing it.
Same reason that I’m not going to fantasize about cheating on my spouse, committing a crime, etc.
In the times that I decided that I would quit my job, I then turned in my resignation soon after. I don’t have to think about something for a long time. If I’m going to do it, then the only step needed before it actually happens is the plan for doing it the best way.
I also believe that quitting a teaching job means not coming back for the next year, if that wasn’t already clear.
After nearly 32 years of teaching, I decided to retire at the end of the Fall semester. My school, which used to be a wonderful place to work, had turned into a RJ nightmare.
The last straw was a student, would had been referred 7 times by me between September and November with no meaningful consequences, decided it was OK to threaten me and several other students with physical violence.
I referred him again… the response was questions about what I had done to provoke him (despite a similar record in his other classes) and the like, and that we needed to have a “conversation”.
I saw the writing on the wall, and decided to do what I had once thought I’d never do - retiring mid-year.
My wife still works in the district… her school is an RJ nightmare. Students and staff are repeatedly attacked by certain students (her co-worker has hospitalized with a concussion from a student attack), with no consequences.
Glad I got out when I did.
I’m now teaching part-time at a Charter that doesn’t allow student misconduct… MUCH better!
This is happening more and more often to me every year. I very honestly don't think I have more than a year or two left in me. I used to love it so much, but the stress is starting to break me.
Oh honey, I don’t know when I don’t fantasize about quitting. Middle of the year, beginning of the year , summer. I think it’s normal. Are we teachers if we’re not constantly thinking about quitting?
I think if that's a fantasy, you should probably do it.
Yes! My last 5 years was a real struggle and I even put my notice in one year. Our coordinator told me to sleep on it lol (I also do not think I was the only one putting in resignation letter post pandemic).
I snapped out of it by the next morning
If you’ve been thinking about this everyday let’s say, that’s telling you something.
Maybe start journaling. Write for 2-3 weeks or longer really, then reread what you wrote. I have a feeling you’ll gain some perspective and insight from your own journaling. Also, if you’re having dreams about it, that’s telling too
Good luck w your decision
I started late in life at age 50 so I am working till age 62 and retiring. This is my second career.
You're not alone for sure!!! However team up with your colleagues for ideas on best practices and how to alleviate some of the stress. Take pictures of the student work or invite the parent to come in to see their child's grades. Try to stay in until the end of the year, if you can. Then decide what you really want to do with your career. Check in with your school counselor for additional strategies and coping skills.
No, but I do fantasize about leaving at the end of the year. I care about my students and would not want to cause them distress by walking away mid year. However, I am feeling like a different career might be on the horizon
I’m retired now after teaching since the dawn of time. I miss the kids and my colleagues and the fun times I had teaching. My only problem was the principal I had for the last six or so years I taught. He was a lazy idiot who knew nothing about teaching. I did fantasize about throwing a pie in his face and walking out everyday. Does that count?
