Looked at a house (new build) and MIL said the vinyl windows imply the whole house is probably made with cheap, shoddy materials. She thinks everything has to be wood Marvin windows or bust. Is she right? From my research vinyl has its pros too... as long as we aren’t paying like they are wood marvins. Any reactions?

Vinyl is standard for new construction so I would not say she is right. That being said, I prefer an old house with character including wood windows for longevity. Unfortunately they really don’t make em like they used to.

like

What price range? Unless it’s a fairly expensive new build, I wouldn’t be at all surprised by vinyl.

Wood windows are nice but are maintenance hogs. I have them but would rather not. Traded them with the wife to save money in other areas.

Also own a slew of homes even up to $1M. Wood was never an option in any of them.

Since when is listening to your MIL a good idea?

like

Almost never 😂 My MIL and her family do not even try at home maintenance. Both her home and her mothers home are in a complete state of disrepair. I’m talking leaks in the roof that funnel water into the screened in outdoor area and make the ceiling sag. The ceiling of her mother’s house inside the garage literally collapsed. And they talk about these houses like someone will buy the property some day and use the house. Someone needs to tell them it’ll only be good to bulldoze, but I’ll let my husband do that.

I own 8 houses. All vinyl windows. Can’t go wrong. I would look at the details on other fronts. Stone/brick exterior? What kind of crown molding? What kind of appliances? What kind of lights? What kind of landscape. What’s the brand of Hvac. Brand of water heater. Did they put radon? Need to look at all of those factors.

I see two crowds these days. One thinks housing market will crash. The other thinks housing market will soar.

The contrarian in me makes me think this is a decent indication that housing market will stagnate (or increase minimally) for a few years.

As a general rules, I feel like the majority cannot foresee a crash/surge coming. The prevalence of such expectations would hamper the pre-conditions necessary for such a dramatic change.

Good evening all,
With my partner we are considering making a move to the countryside of Switzerland, with a gorgeous RE project offering incredible views on immaculate mountains and lake. However, it is far away, and will require 1h+ train/car commute vs. 10 min biking right now. We are scared it will bite us back at some point, although COVID helped w/ remote working being a new norm. The project will be done 2024, so I hope to have a more relax job by then. Any similar experience to share?

Hi all, I’m in the north east metro area and due to the current RE market we decided to look into PA specifically Lancaster. Anyone in this market and have any thoughts on where it’s headed? We’re looking purchasing a single family property all cash at 110k that rents for $1100 a month. The last owner bought for 35k like 15 years ago 😩 but hoping buying and holding for a few years will give a equal or greater returns over the long run.

I have significant equity in a property (300k+) and maybe another 200k across other properties. I have a decent amount of money in cash and already 200k or so in stocks. Would you consider pulling money through cash out refi and using it? I get nervous for stocks being so high. I have a few properties in pipeline already. How would you suggest using it (if at all).

It’s a hassle to lift it up change the tiles and fixtures and put it back. It’s old but works great. Remodeling ppl recommend get rid of it, give space to buyers if they want to buy standalone tub. I thought it adds value to have whirlpool tub. But can’t even change fixture. Should I get rid of it?

Got news that my house closing may have to be moved due to a delay in the sale of my home. My partner’s income was excluded in the DI ratio, but if it were included we’d be well under the % threshold and can be approved to close on time regardless of the sale of my house. However our mortgage company’s underwriting team has been painfully slow in confirming if her income qualifies. She’s been at her new job 1 month after a year off. Anyone with underwriting experience have insight?
