The real crime is the number of people out there who feel stuck because they don't know their rights or opportunities.

Usually the formal lawyering makes every dispute worse. But I learned how to be persuasive before I took the LSAT
Not a bit. Saved myself a pretty penny with my landlord when I was in law school. They tried to make me pay for something that state law requires the landlord to pay for.
And what statute protects you from a long notice period?
Exactly my thoughts lol
Used it against my very difficult father who promptly complained about it. No regrets.
I don’t feel guilty because I’m subtle about it. I’d feel guilty if I told them I was a lawyer or skipped straight to legal argument because that feels like trying to intimidate them. But “I’m comfortable using legal jargon in everyday life” so I throw some things in there. For example, I had mold in my apartment and my landlord didn’t respond correctly after initial notification. In my follow up, I used terms from my state’s landlord-tenant statute without quoting the actual statute. It was enough to signal to them to take me seriously without being directly confrontational. Nothing wrong with protecting your rights.
I’m usually subtle/creative about it. But when necessary, I’m straightforward and brief, and offer a solution/way forward. I never say I’m an attorney. But that fancy paper and bar card were expensive, gotta get my moneys worth.
