It’s easy in the moment because I do it subconsciously. But it’s emotionally draining after the fact when I realize I’m not truly being myself.
I don’t like the concept of code switching nor covering and find both concepts draining. I grew up in the suburbs (which doesn’t mean I don’t have Black influences nor suffer from bias, systemic racism, etc) and people often think I’m “unauthentic” or covering if I don’t fit the mold of what they think Black should look and/or sound like. When really, they don’t understand the spectrum of Black.
If you’re just meeting someone new, Black, White, whatever… you wouldn’t bring your whole self until after getting to know them better (IMO). Also, I don’t think code switching is something only Black people do.
It’s draining but I prefer doing it remotely. Being in the office AND code switching is such a death sentence and fast track to hating my life
Same! My livelihood was so down 😩
Easier now that I WFH. I'm not in mode all day. Just on certain Teams meetings and phone calls.
I stopped doing it as there is another black woman on my team who keeps selling herself as the token black and tries to answer for both of us

Let her then, F it
Draining !

I refuse to do it. I have one version of me. This is it. Period
Easy. Been doing it my entire life. No different than Spanish speakers switching to English when needed
It’s easy in the moment depending on the situation. But it can be draining
Yes.
