Do you plan to leave your kids an inheritance, or are you more in the “I’m spending every penny” camp? I joke that my plan is to bounce my last check, but then I think about how nice it would be to give them a little boost. What about you?

Curious if you grew up with help from your parents. We grew up middle class with 2 working parents (still working in their mid 60s), but they did give us a lot (and still pay for the vacation house we all go to to get us there together). The thought of spending everything is a wild take to me, but I’ve also inherited some money from my extended family and I would want nothing more to leave something for all of my family if I could as well.

I agree a lot of it really does come down to what we grew up with. I didn’t get much help from my parents or relatives, so I’ve been thinking about spending more while I’m alive, but I also like the idea of giving my kids a head start.

I like the “die with zero” mindset. Not that I don’t want to help my children financially, but I’d like to help them while I’m still alive. Hopefully I’m not dying before my kids are middle-aged, and at that point I don’t think a lump sum inheritance would be as substantial to them as, say, down payment assistance at age 25 or help with staying out of student loans.

I really like that perspective. Basically support them when they actually need it, rather than leaving a big lump sum later in life. It feels more impactful to give them a boost earlier on.

My plan is to teach my kids to not need a windfall when I go. I want them to be educated, ambitious, aspirational, and responsible. But at the same time, if I have a little bit to leave them, I won't be sad about it

That makes a lot of sense. Teaching them to be self‑sufficient is such a gift on its own, and anything extra would just be a bonus.

I'm doing a bit of both. They'll have an inheritance and their college education fully funded should they choose to go that route. But I'm not going to be scrimping and saving every penny. I've worked hard my whole life and plan on enjoying my retirement to the fullest.

That sounds like a great balance - setting them up for success while still making sure to get to enjoy the life you’ve worked so hard for.

I recently finished my Masters in Cyber Security and have a Bachelors in Software Development. As much as I love the technical aspect of my degrees, I think the happiest me would be in tech sales.
