A lotta hate on MBA's on here and yet we all seem to be applying to them.

I think it's cause we all know MBAs are highly overrated in terms of their usefulness in learning. But they are still seen as the "golden ticket" to high earning power and as a stamp of approval by an institution. Just my two cents.

M7 programs take the best and brightest. As a person who holds a degree from one of them, the best analogy which comes to mind, 'the schools take polished, well rounded rocks and push them down a hill, then charge you a lot of money for the experience.' Is it worth the money? Debatable. Firms like Deloitte are even start to re-evaluate. One thing is for sure....it's a hell of a lot fun to take a two year sabbatical.

like

Waste of time and money IMO

like

Hated on MBAs until I got frustrated with my industry job did one as my exit strategy. Is it a value add? Depends on how seriously you take the academic and networking opportunities. Is it a priceless experience well worth the two years? Absolutely.

like

D2 listen to the strategy which was recently communicated. What we do and who will be doing it will change. Unless M7 programs change, the people doing the work will come from other sources.

Btw...once you leave the big consulting firms. Your mba will be put to use a whole lot more

like

Not everyone was in consulting or business before getting an MBA - I needed one to pivot into consulting and got a lot out of it.

like

Agree with @ey2 - MBA allowed me to migrate from industry to consulting, much better career trajectory

like

D1 how do you know the firm is re-evaluating ? What are they thinking about?

I did mine in my late 20s / early 30s.

By that point - I was well on my way in the executive path. Being older made the case much more realistic and valuable.

In my opinion - the people that get the most out of their mbas are the ones that 1) are doing it because they lve the business field, 2) have the opportunity to put it to use quickly afterwards

Also...top 10 is a good way to go. That and case based programs

What if you pivot from consulting to industry, need an MBA then?

Do you need it for the move from consulting to industry probably not. But does it make you a better leader and professional...yes

Slalom1 why did you seemingly go from executive path to slalom consulting? What level are you and why would you pick that firm over a better known name or industry if you were on exec path? Truly curious as I am debating an exit.

So industry vs consulting came down to impact.

I genuinely feel that there is a better way for how to create business value thru the use of IT. Consulting allows me to bring my thinking to multiple clients per year. That and IT (CIO, CTO, CISO) are cost centers inside of industry.

As for slalom vs bigger names. That was a mix of opportunity and work / life balamce. At slalom....i have the opportunity to design how my group will go to market, which problems we will solve and how we will go about solving them. In effect i get to start my own company inside of slalom. Also - work / life came into play. For over 15 years i have bouncing around the US and Europe doing a lot of amazing projects for big firms. At this point in my life - i feel that its time to find the time to do my hobbies in addition to working. Now dont get me wrong...my target travel for next year is about 40-60%...but that is much better than my previous 100%

I should also note that i left the big firms because the services they sell got boring. With the accentures, ibms, deloittes techs of the world you are really forced to sell technology. The answer is always technology....i got tired of convincing clients that a new tool would definitely solve their business problem.

With the pwc, kpmg, ey, and deloitte risks of the world...the solution was always moving up the maturity model on some industry or govt framework. There was zero actual problem solving or aligning our recommendations to improving the clients business.

Eh this all sound like a bunch of salt IMO. If you get an opportunity to go to h/s/w, you're going to be surrounded be some of the brightest minds in the country. The growth potential and relationships you can establish will lay a much stronger foundation for a successful career than you would have without one.

Anyone have any idea when the hiring freeze might end within AWS ProServ? I’m currently at Amazon and have a TS clearance, PMP & CSM. I come from a Big4 consulting firm with a background in Enterprise Performance. I’ll be honest and say I’m not feeling very safe in my current role with the ongoing layoffs. Instead of leaving, I’d love to go back to my “consulting roots” and join the ProServ team. I’m taking my AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam next weekend. Hoping this freeze is lifted soon.

SPHR exam- has anyone ever been “randomly selected” for an application audit? This just happened to me and the sheer amount of effort that is going to go into collecting all the documents almost makes me not want to follow through. Guess I’m not really looking for a solution here, just venting.

I have a post-MBA offer with Accenture Strategy and I'm seeking advice on whether I should pursue this offer, or if I should continue to recruit for MBB (which may open more doors/opportunities). I previously worked 4 years at Deloitte Consulting.

Where do people from Accenture Strategy (not Accenture Management Consulting) tend to go? Is it possible to have similar opportunities as MBB firms or do you have to work harder to get MBB-type opportunities?
