Ive work in both styles of scenery, their both excelent jubs to start college. But if you work for a company like olive Garden for tips is faster money and you start to learn more on hospitality but you have to be aware that money should be divided into savings just in case of a rainy day. If you work by the hour and salary is a slow income but a steady one. it would depend on what he is looking for. but both styles are great if you are going to start.
I've worked in both and preferred small, family owned places. In my experience, they connect a bit more with their employees and respect schedules with school and such. But I also think enjoying the work environment is most important.
I think the bigger chains would help him more the next 4 years. They are steady and stable as far as customers go and he can expect big tips as long as he is serving well. It'll be fast paced for sure and give him some good transferable skills.
It is such a case by case basis. Case in point, I worked at a chain restaurant in my hometown. Terrible experience. Went to a different location (against my better judgment but needed the job) and it was an amazing place to work! Same name, just different places. Either one you’ll learn a lot and make some money.
