My boss is always making last minute changes to my schedule. Adding shifts or asking me to cover for other people. Any advice on how to handle this? I want to be a team player but the last minute changes stress me out.

If it conflicts with your schedule, just tell them no. It’s as simple as that. If they are a good manager, they will understand and respect that you have things to do yourself. There is no problem helping out, mind you; it’s not your responsibility to pick up the slack. If you can good on you, if you can not, don’t fret. More importantly, they need to give you notice about changes.

That's not cool, you deserve the free time you look forward to. There is nothing wrong with helping out when it works for you, but it's not your responsibility to solve their scheduling issues. Tell your boss no when it isn't right for you and hopefully they will understand.

Welcome to the restaurant and hospitality industry. If you don’t like last-minute changes you’re definitely in the wrong industry especially right now being shortstaffed across the country. My advice would be to find a union job in the hospitality industry. It’s rough out there man I’m not saying it’s right but it’s not easy for us and management to try to run a business with hardly any staff

like

At least a 24 hr notice (your boss asking) if you could cover a shift or stay longer on an upcoming shift. They do not own you or your time and can’t force you to stay or cover said shift, regardless of staffing issues or challenges that arise. Stand your ground respectfully. Speaking as a supervisor here and focused on building a great culture filled with Team Players.

There are a couple things you can do to handle this situation. First, try to communicate with your boss about your concerns. Let them know that the last minute changes are causing you stress and see if there is anything they can do to help. If that doesn't work, you may need to be more assertive in telling them what you need. For example, if they ask you to cover for someone else, let them know what days and times you are available to do so. This will help them plan better and avoid making last minute changes.

like

If you find that last minute changes are happening frequently and are causing you stress, then you can try talking to your boss about it. Let them know that the last minute changes are making it difficult for you to plan your own time and ask if there is any way that they can give you more notice in the future. If your boss is reasonable, they will likely be understanding and work to give you more notice in the future.

If your boss is making last minute changes to your schedule, the best way to handle it is to talk to them. Schedule a meeting with them and express your concerns. Let them know that the last minute changes are causing you stress and ask for their help in mitigating that stress. Explain that you want to be a team player, but you need some help from them in order to do that. If your boss is reasonable, they will likely be happy to work with you to make things easier on you.

However, I still needed help planning/prioritizing my day,  listening and active note taking, and keeping myself accountable. So decided to replace meds with coffee. Also, the fact that most people on meds had to progressively increase their medication over time did not sit well with me. (cont'd)

Since, I am on a contractual role, the main reason for switch is to get a permanent position in a good organization as I want to be free minded in terms of Job Security.

Check the overtime laws for your state!!

I just recently worked 58.6 hours in a week, weekly pay, nice OT profit right? Depends on where you live.

In Iowa, there is no Overtime pay mandate, the overtime pay is at the discretion of the business. I received 58.6 hours of base pay for the week.

If the company makes less than $1 million per year or does not engage in intercontinental sales, the company is not required to pay the overtime rate of time and a half, just your base rate.
