Sure. I have done both labor and employment matters for the federal government. I used to work for Veterans Affairs and 90% of my workload was labor. That consisted of negotiating/updating union contracts, memos of understanding, researching cases, and defending the Agency in grievance arbitrations and unfair labor practice matters. I left VA for my current job with a different agency and 90% of my workload involves federal sector employment discrimination cases filed with the EEOC. My day to day consists of case research, reading investigative reports, propounding discovery, attending scheduling conferences, interviewing witnesses and, depending upon the scheduling order, drafting motions for summary judgment. Sometimes I have to file or answer a motion for sanctions or a short continuance. It really just depends. I like employment litigation better than labor, but both practice areas will keep you busy. My core hours are from 8:00 until 5:30. I rarely work late.
Thank you so much for the insight! This is helpful for expectations when learning. I appreciate your insight!
To add on top of what was already posted - every day supervisors from other branches of my agency stop by and ask me for legal advice. Usually it’s related to punishing people who misbehave or underperform. Our previous employment counsel was extremely risk averse and didn’t want to do anything about a lot of things, so it took some time for the supervisors to learn that I’m very eager to roll the dice with adverse actions against employees. But now the higher ups told me my trigger-happiness created a culture where supervisors are not afraid to enforce conduct and performance standards.
