Does anyone’s office provide lunch? My company doesn’t, but I’ve always been curious if having meals provided actually helps people stay more focused or productive during the day. For those of you who do get lunch at work - do you feel it makes a real impact? And for the rest of us, do you think it would change much if our companies started offering it?

I have free lunch at my office. Don't think it helps with productivity but it's nice not having to pack lunch or go out everyday. The food is okay on most days.

Yeah, I can definitely see how that convenience would make the day feel a bit smoother. Even if it doesn’t boost productivity, not having to plan lunch every day sounds like a nice mental break!

I worked at a place that provided lunch on Fridays. It seemed really cool and I loved it at first, but I'm a vegetarian and they never really cared about ordering vegetarian options. So eventually it just became a point of resentment for me, lol. I never got to take advantage of it except for the occasional side salad or something. I really think those kind of perks work best when companies consider the needs and wants of all of their staff.

Agreed - those perks only feel meaningful when they’re inclusive. Otherwise, they can end up doing more harm than good. It’s a nice idea in theory, but execution really matters.

No, we don't get lunch. There's a kitchen with a lot of soda and bottled water and snacks, but it's not like you could make a real lunch out of it. Most people just go out for lunch, or bring something from home. I do either, I prefer to bring my own lunch, but if I don't have time to prepare it I'll grab something nearby. I don't think offering lunch would make a big difference, it might be seen as a nice gesture but that's about it.

We have one of those, along with a self checkout station. Nothing is free

Personally it doesn't change much for me. Free lunch is great but i'd rather have flexibility and more PTO. I think that matters more for productivity than free food. I think free lunch is good at getting people in the office, but not necessarily to be productive.

Totally agree - free lunch is nice, but things like flexibility and time off have a much bigger impact on how productive and motivated I feel!

My prior job provide lunch 1-2 times a month. I’m WFH now, so no more free meals for me.

Nice! Even just a couple of free lunches a month feels like a treat. WFH definitely has its perks, but you do miss perks like free lunch, free gym, etc.

We don't get lunch offered but I would love the option of having lunch at work. We have a very small office though so could never imagine it happening. Personally I like working for smaller companies and I feel you don't get those options!

Totally get that - lunch perks are great, but there’s something really nice about the closeness and flexibility of a small team.

So, I've realised there's a problem with developers, a lot of them are coders, not engineers. And another issue, is that, companies don't really care about their progression as far as I'm aware, so what did you guys do in your own time to transition from being a coder to an engineer?
