I wouldn’t say I have a favorite but depending on the type of matter there are certain associates I would prefer to work with much more than others.
Sometimes it just comes down to compatibility. There is one junior who is super super detail- oriented and confident and doesn’t need detailed instructions, I am a bit more of a big picture person and we work together well and very efficiently. Other juniors who are less confident and need more specific direction are fine to work with, but things just take longer.
One of the other seniors in my group is a bit of a micromanager (from my perspective!), and she doesn’t like working with the same junior as much as I do, she gets nervous that they are willing to do so much independently without checking in.
I have been at two firms, in both firms I was the favorite of a partner who was a bit high strung and neurotic. I am generally just a very calm person who does not get worked up about stuff, and I think they appreciated that I wasn’t going to add more stress to their day by coming to them with my own anxiety.
Whether it is a good thing depends a lot on the partner. If they are solid, give you good work, and have high status in the group, it can be great. If they’re difficult to work for, disliked, and give you terrible work then it is bad to be their favorite.

also, unless you are quite senior, powerful partners typically have seniors who they like and trust their judgment in terms of junior associates, so you should be aiming to get in good with whoever the partner‘s favorite(s) are

This has never occurred to me. I think the goal is to develop your own client base so that the opinions of older partners are largely irrelevant…
But part of this is the senior partner passing down the relationships when they retire
Pro
I always strove to be a go-to person, whatever that looked like for the partners I was working for.
