I believe people should be more open about sharing what make (and honestly be more open to talking about finances in general). A convo like this can be helpful by promoting pay transparency. Lots of companies try to make salaries a secret because they purposefully under pay a lot of their workers.
Knowledge is power. Your bosses know that so they do their best to make you feel bad for doing it.
In my current position, I would not. I’ve been told that I’m close to the 90th percentile by a partner in my practice who does the annual compensation discussion with employees in our practice - it’s our right to know where we position in the range. Mid level position got folks from 6 YOE all the way to 15 YOE so it’s normal that’s it’s going to vary, some are home grown and some are experienced hires with extensive experience.
At my previous work, all first year analysts share their salary and I think they should. All have no prior experience, outside of internship, it’s more of an even playing field worth discussing.
It’s consistent with what I hear on FB, what I see on our pay transparency spreadsheet, and what is disclosed on the job posting for my role. I’m also a high performer so everything lined up. Believe me, naive is not the word people use to describe me.
