The job opening to fill one half of a team. ACDs are high level makers and managers. This is pretty common at most creative agencies
Yes, more often then not ACDs have a specialization. Sometimes they work as a team, sometimes they don’t. My agency doesn’t have teams so an ACD art would be paired with a Sr CW or visa versa depending on the needs of the project.
Yes, the more common thing is surely to have two separate ACDs, and one CD.
Writers & Art Directors. Easy. ACD Copy & ACD Art. It’s always been like this. CD Copy/CD Art. Get it?
So yeah, when I was at a smaller agency I was an ACD who did both. Essentially, I functioned as group CD. Our CD was essentially an ecd for both. In a bigger place ACD is between senior copywriter and a copy manager.
Pretty standard, a partnership. There’s likely an ACD/writer without a partner so they’re filling that role.
In my experience a GCD or ECD no longer has the speciality qualifier, they oversee both. CDs sometimes too, but I still see many partnerships.
