Even after a few successful negotiations, I still get nervous right before the call. It’s strange how personal money conversations can feel. Do you have any tricks to stay calm or confident during that moment?

I just go in with a number and pretend that I'm more confident than I am. Fake it till you make it actually works for me in these instances. Plus, I just reminded myself that they have this conversation probably 10 times a day and it's not really that big of a deal.

Love that. Fake it til you make it!

Imagine them in their undergarments works every time

Hahahaa I’ll try this!

I usually make some notes and have them in mind (or in front of me) so I can make a reasonably good case for myself. Someone told me to always make those conversations about how much you've improved and how you're a more valuable employee than you had been a year or two previous. I usually try to keep to that theme.

I like the notes part instead of a script - that feels much more flexible!

I get nervous too!! I wouldn’t know how to stay calm. I guess, maybe, writing some things down so I can focus on it and not forget anything important.

Agree on writing down notes! The convos are stressful.

I’m hoping to steer clear of any scams by posting & I know it’s been posted before but, again, scams. Anyway, I am looking for something that can be done remotely on nights and weekends after I get home from my daily in-office job. My sister passed away & I’m now helping raise her kids. With Christmas coming, I’m nervous and dreading the season not only to not have her but will I make it a happy one for the kids. I need extra income but need to be home with them in the evenings.

Sharks! I’m 33, currently working as a Java Architect (11.6 YOE, 40 LPA INR). I’m planning for retirement at my 40. Currently owning a house worth 1 Crore INR where I’ll be closing my home loan by this August. Please suggest diversified options of Investment for my retirement. I don’t have any investment till now (except the house) as I used my whole income to close off the Loan which I took in 2019.

What's the best form of compensation to ask for and why?

My employers' CEO just announced that they just received $7 million from investors. He wants to use that money to offer incentives to employees that hussle and drive more revenue for the company. We're not sure what those incentives look like yet, but here are some post-announcement rumors from my co-workers:

Cash bonuses, raises, profit-sharing, company equity, 401k match, etc.

Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!

I renegotiated my start date and it’s different from the date I signed on the offer letter. Do I need to request a revised offer letter or is the email thread with the recruiter sufficient. By the way, my background check is already in progress.

I’m currently in the process of being converted from contractor to permanent. In my initial conversations I was under the impression that I was in a different pay grade and asked for a salary 25k higher than the max allotted for my position. I feel like it gave the impression that I don’t know what I’m doing. Any suggestion how I can recover from this?

I received a job offer from company A and am currently negotiating salary. I have an interview with company B next week and know that they offer a higher base pay. There’s no guarantee that I will be offered a job at company B but my gut is telling me that company B would be a better fit for me. Should I accept the offer from company A, continue interview process with company B and then rescind my offer with company A if company B offers me a job? Will I be burning bridges?

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?
