Everyone always says work life balance matters, but the minute you try to protect your time it feels like you are doing something wrong. When did leaving on time start getting side eyes and turning into a question about commitment? Saying no feels risky and suddenly you are labeled not a team player. It makes me wonder how setting basic boundaries became the problem while quietly burning out became normal.

If you get side eyed by people you just have to ignore it. Some people are brainwashed and think their employer deserves every minute of their day. Normal people know when it's time to quit and go home.

I agree with the core of this, but I also think “just ignore it” undersells how much pressure that side eye actually creates. It’s easy to say tune it out, but when it starts affecting growth, schedules, or perception, it stops being background noise and turns into a real workplace issue.

I feel like it’s always been this way. America really pushes hustle-and-grind culture, and people seem to resent it when you work your 40 hours and go home. At the end of the day, you can side-eye me all you want—I’m leaving to spend time with my family.

This is exactly the contradiction people are bumping up against. Working your forty hours and going home should be neutral, not quietly punished. The resentment toward people who refuse to live at work says more about the culture than it does about the individual setting boundaries.

Worklife balance gets praised in meetings but punished in real life. The moment you leave on time or say no, it’s treated like a lack of loyalty instead of self-respect. Somehow burnout became proof of commitment, and basic boundaries became attitude. That disconnect is the real problem.

This hits the nail on the head. Work life balance gets applauded in theory and penalized in practice. When burnout becomes a badge of loyalty and boundaries get reframed as attitude, that is a leadership failure, not an employee problem.

It’s this grind mentality that’s creeping back into our culture. It was rampant a few years ago and feels like it’s making a return

I feel this too. It really does feel like that grind mindset is creeping back in, just dressed up with nicer language. The scary part is how quickly it becomes normalized again, even after people saw firsthand what it does to morale and retention.

Honestly, if you are not salaried, I would not worry about this at all. Set your boundaries and stick by them. However, if you are salaried, I would still set boundaries because you can still be taken advantage of.

HCL Technologies offer being delayed and recruiter keeps saying that there's a problem with their "Offer release portal system." I have already stated my issues with relocating until after I have the offer signed and ready. The project is supposed to start on the 19th and I'm supposed to join before, or on that date. It's already coming up soon and I don't have the official offer so that I can confidently start the relocation process. Has anyone else recently dealt with this?
