Ex-McKinsey Digital BA, now in BizOps at a large tech company. I keep my LinkedIn open, and a BCG recruiter reached out about a Sr Consultant role at BCG Platinion.

Early rounds went great — got verbal praise from a principal and partner. Final round was supposed to be a case, but the partner mostly grilled me on why I left consulting and whether I’d be okay with slow clients and slide work. I did the case, was told it was strong — but got rejected.

I thought this felt a bit unfair. Thoughts?

Some BCG and Bain people are like that, they bring you to the final round to grill you and make it clear that they are better and you are worse, they thrive on the ability to reject another McK. Same thing for ex BCGers and Bainies who exit to industry and interview current or ex McK

lol peep insecurity and immature useless competition - I didn’t even apply or was actively seeking to return to consulting (indeed just signed a job offer at a different tech company), just thought it’s ironic that BCG was the one who headhunted / reached out to me on LinkedIn, I kept an open mind, stayed humble, prepared, and showed up in the most respectful way and they decided to play a childish game

A lot of things to complain about w McKinsey but I do think we have (or at least try really hard to have) one of the most objectively fair, capability based interview processes ever. My first three jobs out of college were offered on 100% vibes. When I went through interviewer training, I literally did not believe that firms would have such a standardized, calibrated rubric for candidates the way we do at McK.

like

This I agree - felt the same way when I did BA recruiting, which I really enjoyed. That’s why I was a little “shocked” at how subjective and vibe-based interviews for jobs post McKinsey have been. Again not to disrespect other firms for choosing based on fit or vibes, as they are entitled to do what they want since it’s their org, but I definitely have way more respect for the more objective calibrated process we have.

In the spirit of problem solving which part about it made you feel ‘unfair’?

Appreciate and understand that — and I agree, I wouldn’t want to work with those people anyway. I realized early on that I likely didn’t want to return to consulting (let alone downgrade to BCG), but I was still open-minded, respectful, and prepped seriously — because that’s how I approach every opportunity.

You didn’t miss anything. BCG X is not doing particularly well.

Interesting - could you share more as to why or how platinion isn’t growing as much?

“Let alone a downgrade to BCG” - why is McKinsey digital to BCG X a downgrade, not an upgrade given BCG X’s faster, more standard promo and hence higher pay with the same EOY? Or is it strictly “brand name”?

I never got headhunted or applied to BCG X - BCG X i believe only has roles for technical positions - I got headhunted for and applied to Platinion - which yes, is slower, have less standard promo, and lower pay than BCG general and obv McKinsey. The role like I explained was for a Sr Consultant position with Platinion, pretty sure there are no Consultant positions at BCG X (unless I’m mistaken) feel free to actually read the post if you haven’t and instead of just deciding to jump to conclusions based on erroneous facts

Is Platinion just like, competing with acn and deloitte for si work?

Platinion is not like a SI because they focus on tech strategy, architecture, and digital design—not large-scale implementation, systems deployment, or managed services like Deloitte or Acn

Senior attorneys at v100, how common is it for attorneys who start at small firms to lateral to biglaw? Have you worked with any? Conventional wisdom is always that if you don’t start there it’s hard to “trade up”. My coworker and I just did it to two different great v30 firms, and I’m wondering if it’s really that uncommon? Just out of curiosity. We’re not special counsel with special niche skills or anything, just associates. Pitfalls to beware? Positives?

What types of work accommodations can help people with ADHD? I am starting to believe 35+ of having not managed my ADHD has really negatively impacted me in career growth etc. I'm realizing a lot of things about myself are because of the ADHD. I want better for myself and family but 1. I don't enjoy the same things forever 2. Imposter syndrome and RSD make me believe it's acceptable to start over in new places at low salaries. 3. Typical college won't work for me. 4. I also can't relocate.

Hi All, I have an urgent query regarding TCS BGC process. My issue is that I have worked in X, Y and Z companies.
In X company I worked for 26months but my pf account is there for last 13months, before that my salary was very low so sometimes I got salary in hand or in pay cheque. I do have salary account statement for most of the months except 3-4 months in between my tenure. Will I face any issue for this?
Note: I do have good relationship with X company.
Please give your valuable suggestions.

Recently obtained my aPHR and I’m considering next steps in advancing my career. I am eligible to sit for the SHRM-CP presently and will not be able to sit for a PHR until 09/2023. Any pros/cons with either certification? Should I wait to sit for PHR or go for SHRM-CP now?

Did anyone else adopt the new Florida Wonders curriculum? We just adopted it this school year, and I teach 4th grade. My team and I have not found a good flow, schedule, or whatever you want to call it. We feel like it teaches too many skills in one lesson, and we are not able to truly teach anything “deep” enough for students to master. Does anyone have any insight? What do you do? Do you like the curriculum? Why or why not? Would you be willing to share what you do weekly/daily? Thanks!
