I think one thing you have to keep in mind is, presumably, you’re in Corporate or some other in demand practice area during a time in which the market is disconnected from reality and the demand for legal services is absolutely bonkers. There are a lot of firms desperate for talent right now, so I imagine the hiring filters have been loosened. I would imagine it’s still a very difficult, but not impossible, path in normal times, but likely easier at the moment.
Super small firm ec/vc bottom of my law school lateralled into v100 and then to v30. Had to drop class years, though.
It is uncommon because this typically only happens with people who had biglaw credentials to begin with (in terms of academic caliber, etc.). Very few of these folks start at smaller firms. I’ve seen it though. Only junior associates.

I've seen this frequently in Boston. Many if the kids in my claas who were smart but didn't get great grades first year (but did great later) started at midlaw or small law (or in NH ir RI) and ended up in biglaw by 2nd to 5th year.
I did - lateralled from a super small firm to big law in my second year. But I'm a patent associate in a busy market and technology area, so I think that makes a difference.

I'm in California and went to UCLAW and have the opposite experience. Pretty much everyone I know who wanted to work in big law got there, either through oci or lateralling from smaller firms. I'm really puzzled by the people here who make it sound like it's impossible to lateral to big law from a small/midsized firm but ymmv
I’m a junior associate lateraling to big law from a regional firm (speciality Corp). Does this mean I’ll be seen as only getting the job because of the current market?
Just do good work, no one will care.
