Wow. This is so messed up. And not surprising, which is even more messed up.
Document everything you can while continue negotiating. Having direct reports earning more is a very solid case. If any retaliation ever happens, you can choose to leverage the documented evidence in your favor. I know people suggest lawyer up too but the lawsuit can be a long and dreadful process.
Would suggest start looking elsewhere immediately and try to find a place with better culture that recognize your value not based on gender.
I believe bringing up marital status is a no no. Consult a labor lawyer and confirm and then write to HR to have the incident on the record.
It is - marital/family status is a protected class in the US. This is a huge legal error on their part.
Go somewhere where you’re valued OP.
You may have to get an offer from a competitor and then be willing to move if your current employer refuses to match. There is still some sexism around, but it mainly exists because women are not as assertive as men when they're negotiating. Good luck.
Men are more assertive because they're allowed to be assertive and it's seen as a positive trait... Women have the assertiveness metaphorically beaten out of them and then get blamed for their lack of assertiveness in unfair pay situations. The fact is you shouldn't have to be assertive. If the man has more qualifications and a higher degree fine pay him more but if the field is level, pay should be too.
A good start:
Ok for for real, document all that bs, call a lawyer and sue the hell out of them. Retire early.
What state are you in? Do you have extra equal pay laws?
Oh, you’re in luck.
Step 1: Go to HR and tell them you are thinking of filing a complaint to CO Department of Labor and Employment about the company violating Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, but they can just fix the situation. Follow up with email. This will put you under retaliation protection.
If they do nothing Step 2: file a complaint.

It is t clear to me from your post- Have you already asked for a salary adjustment and was told no?
This needs to be dealt with at the highest level
Yes, I’d take that right to HR.
