Depends on what business IMO. I acquired an ecommerce business back in June 2023 and faked it till we made it. Fast forward to today we 5x’d top line and have plans for starting our own product brand within the next few months. I don’t have any experience with that so it’s all faking it till I make it lol
I love that and I agree with you. Faking it doesn't necessarily mean lying. It can just be better brand positioning where you portray yourself as someone your target audience should work with until you get everything sorted out..
However, fake promises shouldn't be part of the game
Don't fake it, but don't advertise your weaknesses either. If I genuinely don't know an answer to an issue, I tell the customer I will find out and get back to them. With that being said, I as much research ahead of time as I can so I can at least have an idea what could be the issue or how to perfect performance. I've been in businesses from copier/printer repair to food services to t-shirt printing to firearms training, and now own an axe-throwing venue. If you are fake, people will know. If you are genuine, people will know that too, and respect you more for it. That doesn't mean you have to be an expert and have every certification for every tiny aspect of every business before you get started...then you'd never get started. Getting your hands dirty and learning as you go is a great way to expand your knowledge quickly. YouTube is my best friend many times....and it's not faking it if you're learning as you go!
