Feeling a bit isolated in my department lately—we’re a small team, and while the work is steady, it’s hard to grow when you’re not exposed to new ideas or people. I’d really like to broaden my professional network within government, maybe across other branches or agencies, but I’m not sure where to start. Are there events, working groups, or informal ways to build those connections? How have others broken out of their departmental bubble and made meaningful professional relationships elsewhere?

It does start to feel like you aren’t working with anyone different anymore. I try to take whatever opportunities I can internally to try and get a change of pace. Sometimes they happen a lot, sometimes not so much. Trying to just always be on the lookout for something new too.

I’ve found joining interagency committees and volunteering for cross-functional projects to be a great way to meet people outside my team. Even informal things like attending agency-wide trainings or asking for informational chats can go a long way. It takes a little initiative, but it’s definitely doable—and worth it.

I like this route. It opens up pathways for you to network and you will be the first person to know if there is any job opportunity on that team.

Whenever we have the opportunity to collaborate with other departments, I always take it. For me, I'm constantly networking and trying to meet other people. You never know when a good connection might come in handy.

I experienced this in my previous position, we had a very small bubble where our building was also physically distanced from others. Some things I did and have learned I can do since then: ask about shadowing another position, this helps to make a personal connection super fast and IMO less awkward than trying to do that at other large-scale events. Also find if there are professional organizations within your industry to get involved in, be a member and work your way towards a volunteer position in that organization. If you are part of a union that's actually a really good way to meet people in your industry too since you are all represented the same. Do you have opportunities for conferences/trainings? Find out who else from your industry/department is also going and make sure to connect through e-mail beforehand and plan to meet up at the event.

I’m interviewing for an EA (not your typical role) to a serial entrepreneur/CEO who is also interviewing for a Chief of Staff. They have mentioned I would make a great CoS based on my prev experience & could see me being a COO in the next 10 yrs. After playing back our last meet, I realise the CEO was trying to tease out of me/get me to probe on interest for CoS role. I am interested but also don’t want to talk myself out of the EA role as I really want to work for this individual – advice pls?

I took an offer for campus hire at KPMG in Tech Strategy(Canada) this summer however I haven't been able to get my salary before signing due to complications. My estimate is 62k salary.

Now applied to Deloitte Digital and got an offer for 65k CAD + 2k signing bonus doing Salesforce.

Would I be stupid not to take the Deloitte offer on the table despite already signing with KPMG?

How badly would this look on my professional career?

How do I divide the chores in this case? I’m the breadwinner - husband has been taking time off from work. No kids. Two dogs.

I feel like I do more chores because there are some things that I just can’t stand. Like dishes left in the sink, dirty floor, dirty dogs, laundry…etc. When I ask him to do those chores, he says he will do them later but he takes forever. So I do them instead. He does grocery shopping, yard work, some cooking. Is it unfair if I repeatedly ask him to do more? 😡😡
